This position functions as the sole legal specialist within the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. This position is responsible for providing specialized legal guidance and knowledge on complex environmental issues, litigation hold and record production, freedom of information requests, sharing and protection of data, and interagency or public agreements. This position requires independent judgment and discretion, as well as advanced knowledge of applicable areas of law, and therefore requires a Juris Doctor degree. This position is responsible for responding to the legal needs that impact the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy leadership and staff especially those subject matters listed above. The position is also responsible for providing legal guidance and assistance with the review of administrative rules, legislation, contracts, and policies and procedures specific to this position’s areas of expertise, and for providing legal perspective and guidance to leadership and program staff in committees and meetings as needed.

Required Education and Experience

Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.

Four years of professional experience, including two years equivalent to the experienced (P11) level or one year equivalent to the advanced (12) level.

Selective Position Requirement (SPR) for position: Possession of a Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited school of law and maintain membership in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan.
